Melasma vs. Sun Spots: Why the Treatment Isn't the Same

Patients often come in describing “dark patches” or “spots” without realising that pigmentation has several distinct causes — and that the wrong treatment approach can sometimes make things worse. Two of the most commonly confused conditions are melasma and sun-induced pigmentation.

Sun Spots (Solar Lentigines)

These are typically small, well-defined dark spots that appear on areas with repeated sun exposure — the face, hands, and forearms. They develop gradually over years and tend to respond well to topical depigmenting agents, peels, or laser, alongside strict sun protection.

Melasma

Melasma usually presents as larger, symmetrical patches, often across the cheeks, forehead, or upper lip, and is closely linked to hormonal factors — pregnancy, contraceptive use, or thyroid conditions among them. It tends to be more stubborn, can flare with sun exposure or heat, and often requires a more cautious, longer-term approach since aggressive treatments can trigger rebound pigmentation.

Why the Distinction Matters

Because melasma and sun spots have different underlying mechanisms, a treatment plan effective for one may not help — or could even worsen — the other. This is why an accurate diagnosis, rather than a generic “pigmentation cream,” is the starting point at Prisha Skin & Hair Clinic.

What a Consultation Involves

Dr. Jain examines the pattern, distribution, and history of the pigmentation, and asks about triggers like hormonal changes or medication, before recommending a plan suited to the specific type identified.
